Breast milk is the best food for your baby

For a long time it was thought that it didn’t matter whether a baby was breastfed or bottle fed with formula milk. Thanks to extensive research we now know that breastfeeding does make a major difference.
The quality and composition of breast milk is best for the baby’s health. Breastfeeding is also important for emotional and social development.

Lactation consultants

Sometimes breastfeeding doesn't go as smoothly as you'd hope. A lactation consultant can work with you to try and solve your breastfeeding problems.

The Birth Centre's lactation consultants work in an independent practice. The midwifes can refer you to the consultants in the first week after the birth if they or your maternity assistant think you need expert advice or support with breastfeeding. At a later stage you can also contact the consultants yourself if you need specialised help.

The lactation consultant usually visits you at home. During the first consultation, which usually takes around 90 minutes, she will try to work out the nature and cause of your problems, and offer you advice. If necessary she will make a follow-up appointment.

You can make an appointment with the lactation consultant in a variety of situations.

• You are having trouble with latching
• Breastfeeding is painful
• The baby is constantly restless or sleepy
• Your milk production is insufficient
• The baby is growing too slowly
• You have a breast infection (mastitis) or may be developing one
• You need advice on using a breat pump
• Your baby is premature
• You are breastfeeding twins

Breastfeeding information afternoon

These breastfeeding afternoons are organized monthly on Thursday for English speaking pregnant women and their partners so they can prepare themselves . Our lactation consultants will give you all the information you need between 17.00 and 19.00 hours

Costs: € 10,- per person 
Location: Het Geboortecentrum Amsterdam, De Genestetstraat 3-1, above the clinic.

Fees

The fee for a home consultation is € 135,- per consult. The fee for a consult at the practice 75,- per consult.

Medical insurance cover

Some medical insurance policies currently cover lactation consultancy fees - contact your insurance company to enquire. To make a claim on your insurance, a letter of referral form your midwife or GP may help.
