Telephone Surgery
If you have questions about your pregnancy you can call any weekday during the telephone surgery hours, between 9.00am and 9.30am, tel. +31 (0)20 6831640.
If you have an urgent question during the weekend you can always call the midwife on duty on the emergency number. If it’s not really an emergency, we prefer you to wait until the afternoon to call, so midwives can sleep undisturbed in the mornings after attending births at night.
Fertility Surgery
In 2006 we are starting a Fertility Surgery. The surgery provides couples who want to prepare for a pregnancy with information on healthy conception. Couples who are having trouble getting pregnant can also attend the surgery. Information on the menstrual cycle, advice on lifestyle, eating and health habits, and tips for a ‘fertile’ sex life can considerably increase your chances of getting pregnant. There are also possible treatments that can increase fertility. Prenatal screening is also available with all the difficult and complex dilemmas it raises. The midwives offer you support in making all these hard decisions.
Antenatal Surgery
The midwife monitors the pregnancy and provides support and advice. She takes time to inform you about what’s happening to your body. During check-ups she provides information on food and lifestyle and answers your questions. She gives tips on how to reduce or prevent physical problems during pregnancy. She regularly checks your state of health, blood pressure, and the baby’s growth. If any complication arises she will refer you to an obstetrician or another specialist. The hospital and midwife together will decide what course of action should be taken. In many cases, if everything turns out to be fine, you will be referred back to us. Even if you’ve transferred to an obstetrician for a while, we’ll still stay in touch. If you’ve given birth with an obstetrician in hospital, we’ll take over when you come home from hospital. In this way there is a continuity of care and in practice you can always fall back on your own midwives with any questions or problems. We’ll keep you in our sights from beginning to end.

Post-natal check-up and Motherhood Surgery
If you are interested to have a follow up appointment at the Motherhood Surgery, discuss it with the midwife who does your post-natal check-up. She’ll make a new appointment. The Motherhood Surgery is an extra service, which isn’t covered by health insurers.

The waiting room
The surgery is by appointment. Sometimes it’s unavoidable that you have to wait because the person before you needs more than the scheduled time. There is reading material and many books of birth cards from over the years. On the mirror on the toilet door the assistant writes up the names of all the mothers who have just given birth with the name and sex of their babies. Everyone looks forward to the day their name will finally appear on the mirror. Many women know one another from their maternity classes. When women come for their weekly check-up, the first thing they usually do when they arrive in the waiting room is to look at the mirror. Who’s given birth this week?
